Pest Control 101 for Restaurants: Why Worry So Much about Rodents?

Posted on March 20, 2013

You want to find Sacramento exterminators, ASAP, to clean out a horrid rodent infestation at your restaurant. You probably don’t need to be reminded about the stakes for your business and your customers.
But in case you’ve been dithering…

A single rodent sighting can have a horrific ripple effect on your brand’s popularity. Imagine a customer spots a “furry little friend” scurrying across a booth. Within minutes, she could post that experience on Yelp or — even worse — upload a picture to Instagram. Within just a few minutes, all the hard work that you put into building your business can be decimated.

rodent infestation — perhaps even more so than an infestation of bugs or other creepy-crawlies — is awful, because human beings are hardwired to be repulsed by rats and their brethren.

The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) recently put out a press release warning homeowners (and restaurant owners) of increased dangers of rodent infestations.

During the winter, rodents invade over 21 million homes in the United States, often breaking in through tiny cracks and holes no larger than a dime. The Norway rat and the House Mouse are the two most common uninvited rodent guests. These creatures can “skeeve out” your diners and also spread disease, including typhus, infectious jaundice, rat bite fever, salmonella, and Weil’s disease. They can also destroy your building by chewing through dry wall; and they can start fires by chewing through electrical cables.

Missy Henriksen, the NPMA’s VP for Public Affairs, put the dangers in graphic terms: “[rodents] may be cute in cartoons, but in reality [they] pose a number of dangers inside our homes, polluting every inch they cross…once they have moved in, their numbers will quickly multiply, becoming a serious problem within weeks.”

If you’ve seen telltale signs of a rodent infestation, such as strange droppings, tooth marks, tail marks, gnaw marks, burrows, creepy scurrying noises, and broken food packages, do not waste any time.
